Assess

Core Rules v2 p. 13

A great way to include creativity and role-playing in combat. Choose one of the following and then make a DC 10 skill check to:

  • Ask a Question. About a weakness, ability, or immediate plans of enemies, the environment, story, etc. The GM will answer honestly.
  • Create an Opening. Change the next Primary Die rolled against a target this round 1 face higher. This means the attack cannot miss and is more likely to crit.
  • Anticipate Danger. Change all Primary Dice rolled against you 1 face lower this round. This means you cannot be crit, and attacks miss you on 1 or 2.

Notes on Assessing Monsters Are Smart! You cannot assess using the same skill more than once in a single encounter, as your foes adapt to your tactics. You’ll need to stay creative!

Does Create an Opening affect flat damage or d44, d66, and d88 abilities?

Official

Core Rules v2 p. 55

These abilities do not have a Primary Die so they are unaffected by Create an Opening. Instead, the next attack that has a Primary Die would be affected.

Which skill should I use to Assess?

Official

Core Rules v2 p. 13

Whatever skill you use must make sense based on the circumstances. For example, if you’re close to an enemy, you could use Might to create an opening, but against an enemy that is far away, that may not make sense. Or if you want to ask a question about the weaknesses of an elemental, you’d likely use Arcana.
