In Depth Food

PPope

Do your players like really crunchy resource management? Do they like cooking? Do you want to give them healing without handing out magic items? These rules aim to provide a more indepth food system that encourages active management of a party's food and allows for meals to provide more indepth bonuses than those found in Lodging Boons (GMG 22).

Cooking Meals

Whenever heroes take a rest, they can cook a meal and gain benefits. While the heroes rest to Catch their Breath, only two ingredients can be used. While the heroes Make Camp or take a Safe Rest, any number of ingredients can be used.

When combining ingredients, the chef must make a Nature check with a DC equal to 6 + Twice the Number of Ingredients. If they fail, the meal provides no benefits. If you only cook with one ingredient, no check is required. Additionally, while combining ingredients, only the strongest of the same benefits stack (If you combine Dried Fruits and Candied Fruits you only heal 4d4).

Safe Feasts

If your players decide to cook a meal on a Safe Rest, any benefits they would gain but do not need are saved for their next Field Rest. For instance, if Jimmy cooks a meal with Fresh Fruit and Raw Meat, his party would gain 15 temporary hit points immediately and restore 8d4 HP during their next Field Rest.

In addition, Meals made on a Safe Rest do not require checks to succeed.

Augments

Lodging Boons

Spending extra gold on lavish accommodations can provide valuable temporary benefits. These perks might include quicker recovery, valuable contacts, additional resources, or unique opportunities. The specific benefits depend on the quality of the lodging and the amount spent. You can roll from the table, or award a Minor, Major, or even EPIC Boon based on how much the heroes pay and where they rest:

  • A Minor Boon: Typically costs around 10 gp.
  • A Major Boon: Typically costs around 100 gp.
  • An EPIC Boon: Typically costs around 1,000 gp.

These Boons are temporary and last only until the heroes take another Safe Rest. Adjust the cost and impact to suit your campaign and the party’s level of health.
