Gestalt Multiclassing

SSanityWithIn

In this multiclass variant every hero levels simultaneously in two classes.

How does this work? With every level you get all features from both classes with a few exceptions.

KEY stats:

  • Choose 1 KEY stat from each class. As usual the other 2 stats become your secondary stats.
  • Whenever you gain a level with KEY stat increases you gain +1 to both KEY stats.
  • Whenever you gain a level with secondary stat increases you gain +1 to both secondary stats.

Action Economy: Gestalt characters have 4 instead of 3 actions and start combat with +1 action.

Encounter Calculations: Gestalt characters count as 2x their level in regular encounter calculations

I still have to make a bit of testing for solo fights. My suggestion for those is

  • to test the waters with +1 level to the solo and increase slowly if needed and/or running bosses after other encounters, so the heroes resources are already a bit drained.
  • Give solos a double turn after every gestalt hero.

Why use this variant? Gestalt multiclassing works very well for small parties, making it perfect for a duo of heroes to still cover the usual bases of a 4 hero party, without the need to rely on companions. It might also be interesting for bigger parties: Nimble classes are power level wise very frontloaded, so in regular multiclassing low level dips are too impactful in my opinion. Additionally the Nimble classes are very fun and totally worth to take all levels in them.

Weaker variants:

  • Only take the higher Hit Dice and HP instead of summing both
  • Only count level once for calculating a combined Mana Pool
  • Only increase one KEY or secondary stat, whenever you gain a level with the corresponding stat increase.
  • Keep the regular 3 actions instead of 4 actions.

Multiclassing

If your GM wants to allow for additional creativity for experienced players (and potentially broken combos!), when heroes level up, they may choose ANY class. For example, when a level 4 Berserker levels up, he could pick Commander, and take the level 1 Commander features instead of the level 5 Berserker features. He would have 4 d12 Hit Dice and a single d10 Hit Die. A hero gains the equipment proficiencies of all their classes but should use the advantaged/disadvantaged saves of whichever class has the highest level.

"Broken" Can Be Fun! Planning, building, optimizing, and “breaking” a class build IS the fun for many people. The GM may need to make the game substantially more challenging if multiclassing is allowed. The GM also may veto any particularly overpowered, unfun, or implausible combo for the sake of the story and overall fun of the table. If this happens, well done! Your hero was too powerful for reality.
