HexbinderCoven of theBound One

Story-based Subclass

Your soul is not solitary. Something impossible has taken shape beside it: a guardian, predator, revenant, and nightmare all at once—a chimaera. It is not summoned from some fixed order of spirits. It is shaped by your will, your curse, and whatever answered when you reached into the dark.

A Chimaera is a supernatural being bound to your life and shaped by your imagination. It may take the form of an extraplanar eidolon, beast, geist, living weapon, angelic horror, alchemical wight, or anything else you can envision. It may even be an amalgamation of several forms. No two Chimaeras need resemble one another. Its appearance, composition, and apparent creature type are entirely cosmetic and have no mechanical effect.

Level 3

Chimaera Statistics.

Your Chimaera:

  • is your Size;
  • has Speed 6;
  • uses your DEX for attacks;
  • uses your Armor and saves;
  • shares your skills and senses;
  • can communicate with you telepathically;
  • cannot equip or benefit from separate weapons, armor, or magical equipment;
  • cannot cast your spells or use your Hexbinder features unless specifically stated;
  • has its own space, movement, Reach, and conditions.

Choose whether its attacks deal bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage when you gain this feature.

Chimaeric Vitality.

When you choose this subclass, all your Hexbinder Hit Dice become d10s, including Hit Dice you have already gained and those you gain later. You and your Chimaera share these Hit Dice. Your Chimaera does not have a separate supply.

Manifest Chimaera.

Manifest your Chimaera in an unoccupied space within Reach 1, or dismiss it. Your Chimaera remains manifested until you dismiss it, become Dying, or it is otherwise banished by an effect. It may remain manifested outside combat and can perform ordinary physical tasks appropriate to its form. Your Chimaera is not a minion and does not follow the normal minion rules.

One Life, Two Bodies.

You and your Chimaera share:

  • turns and reactions,
  • HP,
  • temporary HP,
  • Hit Dice,
  • Wounds,
  • and the Dying condition.

Your Chimaera does not take a separate turn and does not possess its own actions. You may spend your actions to have either yourself or your Chimaera act. Whenever your Chimaera moves using one of your actions, it may move up to its Speed. You and your Chimaera share one Reaction each round.

Damage dealt to either body reduces the same HP pool. Healing either body restores the same HP pool. If you and your Chimaera are both affected by the same area or effect that deals damage, heals HP, grants temporary HP, or causes Wounds, apply it only once. If the effect would produce different results for each body, apply the worse result once. Conditions that do not directly affect your shared HP are tracked separately. For example, your Chimaera may be Restrained while you remain free.

Your Chimaera disappears when you become Dying. When you are no longer Dying, you may manifest it normally.

Tandem Assault.

Choose a creature that you and your Chimaera will both attack. Your Chimaera may first move up to its Speed. It must end this movement in a position to attack the chosen creature with you.

You and your Chimaera then attack the target simultaneously:

  • You make one melee weapon attack.
  • Your Chimaera makes one DEX attack: Reach 1: 1d6 + WIL damage.

Roll and resolve each attack separately. Each attack may hit, miss, or crit independently. If your attacks both hit and you are flanking the target, you do another 1d4 + WIL damage. You flank an enemy when you and your Chimaera are on opposite sides or corners of that enemy’s space.

Tandem Assault counts as a single attack for rules that limit you to attacking only once with a normal action. For features that trigger when you attack, hit, crit, or damage a creature, Tandem Assault counts as one attack unless the feature specifically refers to either your attack or your Chimaera’s attack. Neither attack may generate another normal-action attack.

Level 7

Hex Conduit.

You may cast Hexbinder spells and use Hexbinder abilities as though you occupied your Chimaera’s space.

You remain the caster and spend all actions, mana, and uses normally. Any attack made through your Chimaera’s space is still made by you unless a feature specifically says otherwise.

Shared Malice.

Your Chimaera’s attack during Tandem Assault may benefit from effects that apply against creatures affected by your Afflictions or Mystic Marks.

Your attack and your Chimaera’s attack still count as one attack for triggering Hexbinder features. A feature cannot trigger separately from both attack rolls unless it explicitly refers to your Chimaera’s attack.

Level 11

Boundless Pursuit.

When either you or your Chimaera hits an Afflicted creature, the other may move up to half their Speed toward that creature. This movement requires no action. This movement must end closer to the creature than it began.

Greater Tandem Assault.

Your Chimaera’s attack during Tandem Assault improves to: Reach 2: 2d8 + WIL damage. When both attacks hit while you and your Chimaera are flanking the target, the additional damage added to the Chimaera’s attack increases to: 2d4 + WIL.

Your melee weapon attack remains unchanged.

Level 15

Soul-Rending Onslaught.

1/encounter, 2 Actions: Choose an Afflicted creature. You and your Chimaera may each move up to your Speed toward the target without triggering reactions. After moving, you must occupy valid flanking positions and both be able to attack the target.

You then strike simultaneously:

  • You make one melee weapon attack.
  • Your Chimaera makes its Greater Tandem Assault attack.
  • Both attacks have advantage.
  • Each attack may hit, miss, or crit independently.

If both attacks hit, the target suffers an additional: 2d12 + WIL damage, ignoring armor. The target is also knocked Prone. After resolving the attacks, either you or your Chimaera may move up to half their Speed. Soul-Rending Onslaught counts as one attack for rules and features that limit or trigger from attacks, unless a feature specifically refers to one of the two individual attacks.

Transcendent Chimaera.

While manifested, your Chimaera gains the following benefits:

  • its Speed increases to 8;
  • its Reach increases to 3;
  • and its attacks count as magical.

Your Chimaera remains your Size.
